#!CNavyBlue #!N  #!Rall274 Starting Data
Explorer #!N #!EC #!N #!N To run Data Explorer using a
workstation, you must have: #!N #!I0 #!N  #!F-adobe-times-medium-r-normal--18*   #!N #!N #!I30
#!N o An account on the workstation #!N #!I30 #!N o
If the executive portion of Data Explorer is to be executed
on a remote workstation, then a  #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18*   . #!EF rhosts file
in your home directory should contain the name of the machine
on which the user interface will run. The permissions for the
 #!F-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--18* . #!EF rhosts file should be set to 600 (read
and write only by the owner). #!N #!I0 #!N #!EF #!N
#!N #!N You can start Data Explorer in any of several
modes. In all cases, you must first do the following: #!N
#!I0 #!N  #!F-adobe-times-medium-r-normal--18*   #!N #!N #!I30 #!N 1. Log on to
your workstation. #!N #!I30 #!N 2. Start an X Window System
running with the Motif or the appropriate window manager. #!N #!I0
#!N #!EF #!N #!N #!N If you are going to create,
modify, and execute visual programs, start Data Explorer initially in the
Visual Program Editor and connect to the executive (server) by typing:
#!CForestGreen #!N #!N  #!F-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18*   #!N #!N dx -edit [  #!F-adobe-times-bold-i-normal--18*   program
#!EF ] #!N #!EF #!N #!N #!EC where  #!F-adobe-times-bold-i-normal--18*   program #!EF
(which is optional) names an existing visual program. #!N #!N If
you plan to execute a previously created visual program, start Data
Explorer initially in the Image window and connect to the executive
(server) by typing: #!CForestGreen #!N #!N  #!F-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18*   #!N dx -image  #!F-adobe-times-bold-i-normal--18*
program #!EF #!EF #!N #!N #!EC  #!F-adobe-times-medium-i-normal--18*   or #!EF #!CForestGreen #!N
#!N  #!F-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18*   #!N dx -menubar  #!F-adobe-times-bold-i-normal--18*   program #!EF #!EF #!N #!N
#!EC where #!F-adobe-times-bold-i-normal--18* program #!EF is the name of an existing
visual program. #!N #!N You may want to start the user
interface without connecting to the executive. For example, you may want
to work on a visual program or macro, but may not
plan to execute it until some later time. In that case,
you can start Data Explorer with the following command: #!CForestGreen #!N
#!N  #!F-adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18*   #!N #!N dx -edit -uionly #!N #!EF #!N #!N
#!EC Once the user interface is started, you can connect to
the executive portion of Data Explorer by following the procedures described
in #!Lconserv,dxall493 h Connecting to the Server #!EL . #!N #!N All of the command line options
for Data Explorer are described in  #!Lcmdlopt,dxall744 h Command Line Options  #!EL  . #!N #!N #!N
