inboard, outboard, and runtime-loadable modules. The
modules themselves (the .c files) are the same in each case.
The differences are
1) the .mdf (module description file)
2) the compilation and linking process (i.e. the Makefile)
3) the way you start dx using your module.
Inboard modules are compiled into Data Explorer. In other
words, you are replacing the version of dxexec (usually)
found in bin_architecture with your own copy.
To start dx using inboard modules, you need to give the
user interface the module description file, and you need to
specify the dxexec to use:
dx -mdf my.mdf -exec mydxexec
(you can also load the module description file after dx is
started using Load Module Description in the File menu, and
you can restart the executive by using Disconnect from Server
and Start Server in the Connection menu. Note that you would
need to specify the dxexec to start using Options in the
Start Server dialog).
Outboard modules run as separate processes. They are quick
to link, as you are not creating an entire version of
Data Explorer when you link. However outboard modules will
typically be less efficient to use, especially if significant
amounts of data need to be transferred to and from the
outboard module. This is because data objects need to be
passed to and from the outboard module via sockets, rather
than as pointers to shared memory. To start dx using
outboard modules, you need to give the user interface
the module description file:
dx -mdf my.mdf
(you can also load the module description file after dx is
started using Load Module Description in the File menu.)
Runtime-loadable modules are, as their name implies, loadable
once Data Explorer is running. You do not need to maintain
a separate copy of dxexec as you do with inboard modules.
To start dx using runtime-loadable modules, you need to give
the user interface the module description file:
dx -mdf my.mdf
(you can also load the module description file after dx is
started using Load Module Description in the File menu.)
Runtime-loadable modules are not available on the IBM
Power Visualization System, Sun OS 4.1, and Data General Aviion.
The makefiles "Makefile_inboard_machine_arch_name" are templates for
creating inboard modules. Simply replace makex.o, add.o, and hello.o
with the names of your .o files. These makefiles assumes that
user_inboard.mdf is the name of the module description file which
describes all of your modules.
The makefiles "Makefile_outboard_machine_arch_name" are
templates for creating outboard modules. Simply replace
"hello.o", etc. with the names of your .o files, replace
"m_Hello" etc. with the names of your modules, and replace
"hello", etc. with the names you want for your executables.
The .mdf file for the outboard modules is user_outboard.mdf.
The makefiles "Makefile_loadable_machine_arch_name" are
templates for creating runtime loadable modules. "loadablelib"
is an example of how to make a "library" of runtime loadable
modules; simply replace makex and add by the names of your
modules. "hello" is an example of how to make an executable
