<p>Here is the bare-bones installation procedure for <small>UNIX</small> users:

<li> Download the <code>zgip</code>-compressed <code>tar</code> file from
<code>ftp.pppl.gov:/pub/fweb</code>. 
The name of the file contains the version number&mdash;e.g.,
<samp>fweb-1.61.tar.gz</samp>.

</li><li> Uncompress and unpack the tar file:

<p>If the GNU <code>tar</code> is installed, these two steps can be combined into

<p>Unpacking creates the directory <samp>fweb-1.61</samp>, with at least the two
subdirectories <samp>Web</samp> and <samp>Manual</samp>.

</li><li> Change to the new <samp>Web</samp> subdirectory and run the configuration script.

<p><samp>./configure</samp> is an <code>sh</code> script.  It attempts to figure out
various local system features automatically, then generates the three
files <samp>defaults.mk</samp>, <samp>config.h</samp>, and <samp>custom.h</samp>; those
are used in the <code>make</code>.  For further information about the
operation of <samp>./configure</samp>, see <samp>fweb-1.61/READ_ME.FWEB</samp>.
</p>
</li><li> Make and install the release:

make install

<p>If <code>gcc</code> is available, it will be used in the <code>make</code>; in that
case, the default <code>CFLAGS</code> should be sufficient.  If another
compiler is used, ensure that it is run in ANSI-compatible mode, not the
old-style Kernighan and Ritchie.
</p>
<p><small>FWEB</small> compiles on my system without any warnings with 
&lsquo;<samp>gcc&nbsp;<span class="nolinebreak">-ansi</span>&nbsp;<span class="nolinebreak">-pedantic</span></samp>&rsquo;<!-- /@w -->.  Please report any compiler warnings
from an allegedly ANSI-C environment.
