<h4 class="subsection">3.7.4 <code>@firstparagraphindent</code>: Indenting After Headings</h4>

<p><a name="index-First-paragraph_002c-suppressing-indentation-of-245"></a><a name="index-Suppressing-first-paragraph-indentation-246"></a><a name="index-Preventing-first-paragraph-indentation-247"></a><a name="index-Indenting_002c-suppressing-of-first-paragraph-248"></a><a name="index-Headings_002c-indentation-after-249"></a><a name="index-firstparagraphindent-250"></a>
As you can see in the present manual, the first paragraph in any
section is not indented by default. Typographically, indentation is a
paragraph separator, which means that it is unnecessary when a new
section begins. This indentation is controlled with the
<code>@firstparagraphindent</code> command:

<pre class="example">     @firstparagraphindent <var>word</var>
</pre>
  <p>The first paragraph after a heading is indented according to the value
of <var>word</var>:

     <dl>
<dt><code>none</code><dd>Prevents the first paragraph from being indented (default).
This option is ignored by <samp><span class="command">makeinfo</span></samp> if
<code>@paragraphindent asis</code> is in effect.

     <br><dt><code>insert</code><dd>Include normal paragraph indentation. This respects the paragraph
indentation set by a <code>@paragraphindent</code> command
(see <a href="paragraphindent.html#paragraphindent">paragraphindent</a>).
</dl>

  <p>For HTML and XML output, the <code>@firstparagraphindent</code> setting is
ignored.

  <p>It is best to write the <code>@paragraphindent</code> command before the
end-of-header line at the beginning of a Texinfo file, so the region
formatting commands indent paragraphs as specified. See <a href="Start-of-Header.html#Start-of-Header">Start of Header</a>.
