<p> <a name="a0000001649" id="a0000001649"></a> </p><p>The need to convert bitmap images – for example, those in jpeg format – into PostScript representations is commonly encountered by users of the L<sup style="font-variant:small-caps; margin-left:-0.3em">a</sup>T<sub style="text-transform:uppercase; margin-left:-0.2em">e</sub>X typesetting system, since L<sup style="font-variant:small-caps; margin-left:-0.3em">a</sup>T<sub style="text-transform:uppercase; margin-left:-0.2em">e</sub>X’s <tt class="tt">includegraphics</tt> command can only incorporate Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) images into documents. A small number of graphics packages provide facilities for making such conversions, including ImageMagick<a name="a0000001650" id="a0000001650"></a>’s <tt class="tt">convert</tt> command, but these almost invariable produce excessively large PostScript files on account of their failure to use PostScript’s native facilities for image compression. PyXPlot’s <tt class="tt">image</tt> command<a name="a0000001651" id="a0000001651"></a> can in many cases perform much more efficient conversion: </p><pre>
