This file is for ideas that have or have not yet been tried, and the
results of these ideas.

- If the email parser was able to emit warnings about misformed MIME
  that it encountered, we could turn this warnings into tokens.

- The numeric entity support looks like it will only support 8-bit
  characters - an obvious problem is from wacky wide-char entities.

  [tim] It replaces those with a question mark, because chr(n) raises
  an exception for n > 255, and the "except" clause returns '?' then.
  Is that a problem?  Probably not, for Americans and Europeans.

- The ratio of upper-case to lower-case characters in an entire message.
  (I'm not sure how expensive it would be to calculate this).  A lot
  of the Nigerian scam spams I get are predominately upper-case, and
  none of my ham.

- A token indicating the length of a message (rounded to an appropriate
  level.  Also a token indicating the ratio of message length to the
  number of tokens, and a token indicating the number of tokens.
  Also, [817813] add a "not in database" token (I'm not sure about this
  one, but I can't articulate why).
  
- A token indicating the ratio of hapax legomena to previously seen
  tokens in the message.

- Punctuation sometimes gets inserted in otherwise spammy words or phrases,
  e.g.: "Ch-eck ou=t ou-r sel)ection _of grea)t R_X -emgffj".  It might be
  helpful to try stripping punctuation.  (Idea from Paul Sorenson)

  [skip] I tried the first (eliding punctuation from words).  From a testing
  standpoint it turns out to not be all that useful, I think for a couple
  reasons:

  * There are plenty of other spammy clues in such messages which are
    sufficient to kick these messages into spam range.  Most of this stuff
    winds up scoring at 0.95 or above for me.  If they don't score as spam
    for you, train on a few and see how it does then.

  * Training databases full of old-ish mail won't contain many of these
    sorts of messages, so enabling punctuation removal won't change things
    very much.

  [tony] I tried Skip's patch and got basically the same results, and
  his reasoning above sounds right for my experience, too.  OTOH, I am
  getting more of these messages now, so my corpus is changing (they're
  still classified as spam without this, though).
 
- Similarly, some letters get replaced by numbers, e.g.: "V1agra" instead of
  "Viagra".  Mapping numbers to suitable letters might help in some
  situations.

- [817813] Add a spelling checker and reasonable sized dictionary and generate
  a "not in dictionary" token.

- Structural analysis of URLs.  It seems a few things might yield some
  interesting tokens:

    * URLs containing a username portion

    * URLs where the server is an ip address instead of a hostname

    * URLs which refer to non-standard ports

    * URLs in an href attribute which refer to a different web server than
      the one surrounded by <a href="http://...">http://...</a>

  Identity theft scams are increasing in frequency and seem to use one or
  more of these schemes to hide the true nature of the URLs they attempt to
  get you to click.
