The maildrop binary is compiled with support for userdb and
logging via syslog (facility mail, priority info).
Version Number

The version number of the courier-maildrop Debian package is derived from
the version number of the complete Courier Mail Server suite.
There is a separate maildrop source package available with a
much higher version number than the version number of the Courier
source package, so don't get confused.
