Některé vyhledávací termy mohou být zapsány zkrácenou formou, která se
skládá z vlnky (<span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">~</code></span>“</span>) následované
znakem určujícím term a případnými argumenty termu. Například zkrácená
forma <code class="literal"><code class="literal"><a class="link" href="ch02s03s05.html#searchTermName">?name</a></code>(aptitude)</code> je
<code class="literal">~naptitude</code> (hledá balíky, které mají ve svém názvu
řetězec <code class="literal">aptitude</code>).

Při zápisu termů pomocí jejich zkrácené formy slouží vlnky a
tzv. <span class="quote">„<span class="quote">bílé znaky</span>“</span> (mezery, tabulátory a pod.)
k oddělování jednotlivých termů. Například <span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">~mDaniel
Burrows</code></span>“</span> se bude shodovat s libovolným balíkem, jehož
pole Maintainer (správce) obsahuje řetězec
<span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">Daniel</code></span>“</span> a zároveň jméno balíku
obsahuje řetězec <span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">Burrows</code></span>“</span>. Oproti
tomu <span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">~i~napt</code></span>“</span> se shoduje se všemi
nainstalovanými balíky, jejichž jméno obsahuje řetězec
<code class="literal">apt</code>. Chcete-li do hledání zahrnout bílé (nebo jiné
speciální) znaky, můžete před ně vložit vlnku (např. <code class="literal">Daniel~
Burrows</code>), nebo term obklopit uvozovkami (jako
třeba <code class="literal">"Projekt Debian"</code>). Dokonce je možná i
varianta (<code class="literal">Projekt" "Debian</code>). Uvnitř termu v
uvozovkách můžete pro zrušení speciálního významu uvozovek použít
zpětné lomítko (<span class="quote">„<span class="quote">\</span>“</span>). Například
<code class="literal">~d"\"email"</code><span class="phrase">"</span>
se bude shodovat s balíky, jejichž
popis obsahuje uvozovku bezprostředně následovanou řetězcem
<code class="literal">email</code><a href="#ftn.idp25348868" class="footnote" name="idp25348868"><sup class="footnote">[13]</sup></a>.

Otazníky (<span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">?</code></span>“</span>)
<span class="emphasis"><em>neukončí</em></span> krátkou verzi termu, ani když je
následuje jméno termu. Například
<span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">~napt?priority(required)</code></span>“</span> bude hledat
všechny balíky, jejichž jméno odpovídá regulárnímu výrazu
<span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">apt?priority(required)</code></span>“</span> (namísto
očekávaného seznamu balíků, jejichž jméno obsahuje řetězec
<code class="literal">apt</code> a mají prioritu <span class="quote">„<span class="quote">vyžadovaný</span>“</span>).
Chcete-li zkombinovat krátkou formu termu s termem zadaným jménem,
přidejte mezi termy jednu nebo více mezer:
<span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">~napt ?priority(required)</code></span>“</span>.
Další možností je přidat uvozovky okolo textu za krátkou formou termu:
<span class="quote">„<span class="quote"><code class="literal">~n"apt"?priority(required)</code></span>“</span>.
