    <title>About gDesklets</title>
    <para>gDesklets is a system for bringing mini programs (desklets), such as weather forecasts, news tickers, system information displays, or music player controls, onto your desktop, where they are sitting there in a symbiotic relationship of eye candy and usefulness. The possibilities are really endless and they are always there to serve you whenever you need them, just one key-press away.</para>
    <para>The system is not restricted to one desktop environment, but currently works on most of the modern Unix desktops (including GNOME, KDE, Xfce).</para>

    <title>gDesklets Shell</title>
    <para>gDesklet's shell is a graphical tool used for browsing through installed desklets and controls, for placing them on the desktop and for managing installation of additional desklets from various sources, including desklets website or stand-alone .tar.gz packages.</para>
    <note><para>A new shell is on its way. It will be easier to use and will integrate with the new homepage. That means the shell pulls information from the website and provides information like new desklets, updates. It will also take care of dependencies, a problem users are having all the time. The old one should be removed in v0.4 release.</para></note>

     <title>Browsing through installed desklets and controls</title>
    <para>The default layout of the shell is shown on the figure below. On the left there are desklets categories and on the right meta information about each desklet from this category.</para>
    <para>Desklets are sorted by category by default but you may use other options by selecting drop down menu in the upper left corner to sort them by author's name or alphabetically.</para>

    <para>In order to view installed controls click on the "Controls" button in the lower left corner. This way you may switch between Desklets and Controls view. There is similar possibility to sort controls: by interface and alphabetically.</para>

     <title>Search field</title>
    <para>In the upper right corner is a search field, where you may enter complex expressions to search for specific characters in desklets meta information (Name, Description, Category, Author ...). For example, the following expression will search for all desklets containing "Cal" in their name.</para>

    <para>The shell will list <literal>Calendar</literal> and <literal>Weekly Calendar</literal> desklets, if they are installed on your system.</para>

    <title>Profiles</title>
    <para>With the help of gDesklets Shell it is possible to manage various profiles, i.e. different layouts of desklets on your desktop.</para>
    <para>To create a new profile, select Profiles - New profile from the main menu. You will be asked for naming it.</para>

    <para>Once new profile is created you may begin to add desklets to your desktop.</para>
    <para>If you want then to switch between different profiles, just select the desired profile from Profiles menu. Desklets layout on your dektop will change accordingly.</para>
    <note><para>The empty profiles get discarded automatically when you restart the shell.</para></note>

     <title>Installation of additional desklets</title>
    <para>Additional desklets may be downloaded from desklets website at <ulink url="http://www.gdesklets.de">www.gdesklets.de</ulink> or from other sources (see Other Resources chapter for more information).</para>

     <title>Local install</title>
    <para>Each desklet contains minimum of one .display file which is packed into .tar.gz archive. Once downloaded to install the desklet you just need to drag and drop the file into gDesklets shell. Other option is to select File - Install package from the main menu and navigate to this file.</para>

     <title>Remote install</title>
    <para>In order to install desklets remotly select File - Install remote package from main menu and provide URI, such as for example http://www.gdesklets.de/files/desklets/Calendar/Calendar-0.51.tar.gz. Once the desklet package is downloaded it will install automatically.</para>

    <para>Another option is to drag and drop the URI of package file from your browsers window to gDesklets shell window. It will install as well.</para>

     <title>Desklets manipulation</title>

     <title>Placing desklet on desktop</title>
    <para>To place the desklet on your desktop run the graphical shell, select the desired desklet and double click on it. Desklet will appear (it may take some time), then click anywhere on your desktop to place it.</para>

    <para>Another way to place the desklet on your desktop is to run the following command:</para>

     <title>Moving desklets around the screen</title>
    <para>Next thing you probably want to do is to move the desklet to another place. You may do this in two ways:</para>
    <para>1. Right click on the desklet placed on your desktop, the context menu will appear. Select move (desklet will stick to your mouse cursor), then move your mouse to desired position and click the left mouse button to place it there.</para>

    <para>2. Another faster way is to move the desklets around the screen by holding down the middle mouse button. If your mouse has only two buttons, hold down both of them simultaneously in order to simulate the middle button.</para>

     <title>Removing desklets</title>
    <para>To remove the desklet from your desktop simply select <literal>Remove desklet</literal> from the desklet's context menu.</para>

     <title>Preferences</title>
    <para>In order to configure and customize the desklet, click on it with the right mouse button and select <literal>Configure desklet</literal> item from the context menu that will appear. You will see the configuration dialog similar to this one:</para>

    <para>Most of the desklets have many options available for you to set up, like fonts and their colors, images, backgrounds etc. These options are divided into tabs in some logical way. To view and set up certain group of options just select appropriate tab from above.</para>
    <note><para>In case you change some option and nothing happens, try to restart the desklet (select <literal>restart</literal> from desklet's context menu). Some desklets may not respond to configuration changes on the fly.</para></note>

     <title>Other options</title>
    <para>Other options from the desklet's context menu contain the possibility to view the source code of the .display file (<literal>View Source</literal>) and restart the desklet. This will appreciate mostly the desklets developers. On the other hand, some desklets may need to restart after changing certain options in preferences.</para>
    <para>To view the About window select About from the context menu. You may access README and COPYING (license) files this way.</para>
