<li>create the file - Specify the name, optionally the format: classic (the default) or 64bit-offset.</li>
<li>define metadata - Specify the names and types of dimensions, data variables, and attributes.</li>
<li>write data - Write arrays of data from program variables to the netCDF file. Arrays of data may be written all at once, or in subsets.</li>
<li>close the file - Close the file to flush all buffers to the disk and free all resources allocated for this file. </li>
